This is the class of infrared or visible red laser incorporated in some cameras and many hot-shoe flash units to help with AF in dark conditions when the camera's normal AF system doesn't have enough light to work properly.Īn Overview of the LED and Laser Classification System in EN 60825-1 and IEC 60825-1 That doesn't mean they aren't annoying and won't momentarily blind you like a hot-shoe flash or studio strobe, just that they won't cause permanent damage to the eye (see below). If there is any question just check the laser for an eye safe sticker and make sure it is a Class 1M Eye Safe Laser. The lasers you can buy should meet eye safe requirements. I wouldn't want to get sued for possibly damaging someone's eyes.

I'd use rubber bands instead of glue, and I recommend a low power flashlight, not a laser. I did manage to get the position right in this one and was using a blue gel with Selens MagMod, mind you I've only had about 4 times to get out and learn to shoot in dark clubs. Yah I'm guessing eventually if I do it enough I'll be able to guess the light destination position with out the need for a pointer. I have a few of those in my car for emergency and walking a dog and the higher quality one can be quite intense with the white light, and would like a spot light on the club goer lol. Your body will learn how to accurately point the light. In truth, I think if you practice, you won't need any visual aid at all. I don't know if it would be bright enough in a nightclub.

That LED torch is bright, but not nearly as bright as a laser. Generally, I'm working in more controlled situations than a nightclub, so I can take more time, and position my grids by either taking test shots, or looking at the grids from the point of view of the subject. Velcro might work, but it would need some shimming to get it to point in the same direction as the grids. So it matches the light spread of my various grids.īut I haven't yet found a good way to attach it to the top of my speedlights. It can be zoomed, so that at a distance of 6ft, it can produce a circle of light between 1ft and 4ft in diameter. I use a variety of tight grids on my speedlights and positioning them accurately can be fiddly. You won't get away with using a laser in a nightclub.īut I can see why you would want to. An LED flashlight with an adjustable beam is all you need. If I saw someone using a laser in a club I would get the bouncers to sling him/her out.
